MNC - CONSERVATION BIOLOGY

Fiachra Kearney, a rangeland scientist and conservation biologist, has been working on Mara North Conservancy for the past 2 ½ months examining its overall ecological condition. The conservancy is highly biodiverse, due to a combination of topography, soils and rainfall, but dominated by grassy ecosystems. A large of part of Fiachra’s work involved examining how well these ecosystems are functioning. (Seen here doing a transect with his trusty landrover in the background) The work will result in a series of management recommendations to help set the conservation goals and ultimately improve the management of the habitats and biodiversity of MNC.

EASY KILL

This was an interesting sighting which happened by pure chance. Heading back to camp one evening an Impala sprints past our vehicle and collapses about 10M from us. We assumed it was due to exhaustion as there were no visible signs of external injury, hot on its trail four Hyena. They wasted no time and began gorge themselves, a tug of war ensued each trying harder than the last to claim the best bits of this tasty snack. The whole scene lasted a mere 20 minutes but if felt like a lifetime as we stared if disbelief of our sheer luck. Content they begin to disperse but the Mara has one more suprise for us, Zawadi the local Leopard strolls past.
